This article will go through five home warranty companies (listed below) that could work for you. We’ll discuss on average how much each one costs, the level of coverage they offer and the additional options they offer. Click the provider you want to find out about to read more about them.
In a nutshell, a home warranty helps you to better budget for life’s disasters. They help you save money on expensive repairs needed around your house, sometimes allowing you to completely bypass the expense. This means you can have some reassurance.
What’s more, this could allow you to have extra cash to prepare for such disasters, so you can save that extra cash for other, more exciting things.
All this means a home warranty is ideal for any kind of homeowner, whether you live in a new or old house. A warranty provides year-round financial support, making unexpected breakdowns more manageable and, most importantly, more comfortable.
American Home Shield (AHS) offers multiple types of home warranty plans, with each one offering a slightly different level of coverage. The best one for you will mainly depend on the comprehensiveness you want from your warranty and your budget. While there are multiple options, AHS does keep things relatively simple in that it only offers three different plans.
The most basic is its Silver plan, which covers the most basic major components in your home. In total, this includes parts of 14 essential home systems; plumbing, and electrical systems are included. The Gold plan adds cover for parts of a further nine major systems, including things like kitchen and laundry appliances, and, finally, the Platinum plan protects parts for 23 systems and appliances as well as leaky roof repairs and access to things like unlimited AC refrigerant.
The price you pay for a home warranty from AHS, as explained above, will mainly depend on the type of plan you choose to go with. Just like with many of the providers on this list, you will need to balance how much coverage you want with how much you’re willing to spend.
In addition to the type of coverage you choose, AHS also says on its website that the size, type, and location of your home also influence the ultimate cost of your warranty plan. Whether you live in a single-family home, mobile home, or condo, AHS will work out a tailored solution. There are also additional coverage options for things like swimming pools and roof repairs, which come at an additional cost.
Just like American Home Shield, Choice Home Warranty provides multiple types of home warranty plans, with each one offering a different level of coverage. However, Choice Home Warranty offers an even more simple choice between two different plans.
The Basic Plan covers a whole range of systems and, despite being the least expensive option, still provides a fairly inclusive range of coverage that protects kitchen appliances and exhaust fans. However, while a range of kitchen appliances are covered, the basic plan doesn’t offer protection for your refrigerator. The other option is the Total Plan, which covers everything from your air conditioning system right through to your clothes washer and dryer, and does include coverage for your refrigerator.
The price you pay Choice Home Warranty will ultimately depend on where you live, the type of property you live in, the property’s size and your living situation, as well as the type and number of appliances you want included in your plan.
Once you know all of this information, the company can provide you with a quote and work through your wants and needs directly with a customer service representative, after which you will be provided with an accurate quote. Also, just as is the case with AHS, you can have additional coverage for things like pools and septic systems.
Cinch Home Services, similar to the companies already explored above, offers multiple ways to protect your home against failures and problems not covered by your home insurance. The coverage plans it offers, of which there are three, offer either coverage for a set selection of systems and appliances or an all-encompassing protection package for your whole house.
Its packages give you the choice to cover just your appliances (your clothes dryer, dishwasher, microwaves, etc.), your built-in systems (your air conditioning, electrical system, heating system, etc.,) or all of the above.
The different packages and levels of coverage are clear with what exactly is covered, so you won’t face any confusion in terms of knowing which package is best for you. What’s more, there’s also a clear pricing structure, allowing you to search for the best deal for you.Â
As explained above, Cinch Home Services’ costs are fairly transparent. Unlike some other providers you’ll see on this list which require you to contact them for a quote to get an idea of cost, Cinch Home Services is clear with where its pricing points start.
Its appliance package and its built-in systems package both start at $35.99 per month, while its complete home package starts at $44.99 per month. While these prices are not guaranteed to be what you pay, with your own specific factors influencing the final price, it is useful to know roughly what your warranty cover is likely to cost.
Where Cinch Home Services really shines is in its service guarantee. There are no extra charges for rust and corrosion, no extra charges for unknown pre-existing conditions, discounts on new appliances, and, most importantly, a 180-day workmanship guarantee.
Liberty Homeguard is a popular choice for many people looking for a home warranty, mainly because of its highly customizable policies. Unlike many of the other home warranty providers on this list, Liberty Homeguard allows you to cater your warranty right down to specific devices and systems that you want to protect. If, for example, you only want a warranty for your garbage disposal and your clothes dryer, Liberty Homeguard makes that possible.
If you do want a more all-encompassing coverage plan, that’s also available. The company offers three ‘bundles’; an appliance guard, a systems guard, and a total home guard. What’s more, its pricing is transparent, so you know how much you’ll be paying before you even get in touch.
As explained above, Liberty Homeguard breaks down its pricing clearly on its website, so there’s no need for guessing and no need to contact the company directly for a quote. Its appliance guard costs $699 per year, while its systems guard and total home guard costs $749 per year and $799 per year respectively.
If you opt for the more personalized option, each device and system comes with its own specific cost. A kitchen refrigerator, for example, costs $99.99 per year to cover, while garbage disposal costs $49.99 per year and dishwasher coverage costs $79.99 per year. In short, whatever you want coverage for, Liberty Homeguard look to offer a solution to suit you.
To round off our top five is Select Home Warranty (SHW), a warranty provider that offers comprehensive cover for a variety of homes. Like most of the providers you’ve already read about, SHW offers set, pre-made plans designed to offer the various levels of warranty cover that you might need.
Ranging from major home appliances like refrigerators, ovens, and clothes washers, to household systems like your plumbing, and heating systems, it offers three levels of coverage. Its most basic coverage plan is its Bronze Care, which covers your most basic kitchen appliances as well as your clothes washer and dryer. Its Gold Care protects your home’s core systems like your electronics and heating, and its Platinum Care covers all of the above.
Additional areas of the home can also be added to your coverage plan, so you can get a warranty for things like your septic systems, wells, and sprinkler systems.
The price you pay for a home warranty from SHW will depend on the specific plan you choose. Just like the other providers on this list, the more you want covered, the more it will cost. Unfortunately, SHW does not have a transparent pricing plan, so it’s hard to predict what its plans will end up costing you. Instead, you need to contact them directly for a quote. What this does mean, however, is that the price you pay will be the right one based on your needs and requirements.
Each time a service technician is required to come to your home, you will be required to pay the Select Service Call Fee. According to the SHW website, the fee ranges from $75 – $100, depending on the length of your contract. What’s more, the fee is payable regardless of whether the claim is granted. This is an inconvenient additional cost you should consider when choosing your home warranty provider.
So there you have it, the Consumer Experts round-up of popular US home warranty providers. But which is the best one? Well, as is often the case in life, it depends on your circumstances and what you’re looking for.
If you want to be able to protect your home against as much as possible, a provider like American Home Shield, Cinch, or Select Home Warranty as these companies offer simple, pre-made plans that make the process of getting a warranty as easy as possible. If however, you want a custom plan, then something like Liberty Homeguard would suit you better.
Something else to consider is pricing. Some of the companies here don’t have transparent pricing, while others charge you annually as opposed to monthly. These things will also be something worth considering when you’re making your decision.
Finally, there’s the level of service. Companies like Cinch offer a guarantee of good quality service, while American Home Shield and Select Home Warranty offer a vast range of coverage for things in your home but don’t offer coverage for unknown pre-existing problems.
All of these things will need to be considered when you’re deciding which provider is best for you, or you could…
